MANCHESTER UNITED RATINGS: Dean Henderson - 8. Block in first half and another clean sheet in a cup competition for United. Communicated clearly and well, distribution faultless. Needs a run in the team if he is to establish himself at number one, but doing himself no harm. Reuters

Harry Maguire - 7. Wobbly start but improved like his defence. Fine block at start of the second and totally confident alongside Bailly. United’s central defensive worries have been apparent in the league. Getty

Eric Bailly - 7. Poor start led to Januzaj getting a shot on goal. Another mistake followed a minute later but United avoided another dodgy opening. The Ivorian’s pace and strength does not mitigate his mistakes at this level but he settled well in a team which kept a clean sheet. Beautiful ball to set up James for the fourth, but mistakes will be punished against better sides. Getty

Alex Telles - 7. Able to deal with La Real’s high line, which suited United’s counter attacking game. Left back has gone from United’s problem position to one where Shaw and Telles have made it one of the strongest parts of the team. Getty

Fred - 7. Steady, solid. Set the third goal up with a fine weighted pass forward to Rashford. Overshadowed La Real’s merited midfield of Silva, Illarramendi and Merino. PA

Scott McTominay - 7. Shot on target after 16 in a lively end to end opening. Most dominant midfielder on the pitch, despite United having less possession than the Basques. PA

Mason Greenwood - 7. Best thing he did in the first half was defend a ball across Henderson’s goal. A team player growing into this season as he tries to get to the levels of last. Key as United won for a fourth successive time in the Juventus stadium. Not even Juventus can say that. Getty

Daniel James - 8. Ineffective in the first half. Clever at working with Bruno for United’s second. Then he took the fourth goal superbly, running rapidly in from the right direct at goal and finishing through the goalkeeper’s legs. He really needed that and what energy and speed to have so late in the game. Reuters

Bruno Fernandes - 9. Set up Rashford and had a header on goal and waited, cleverly amid Basque chaos, on a Rashford ball for United’s opener before stroking the ball in. Intelligent dummy which led to his second goal. Bruno Fernandes should not be playing Europa League football. Reuters

Marcus Rashford - 8. Early chance to put United ahead in a very lively start. Second opportunity on 18 should have found the net. Made vital runs on the left into the space afforded to him and wary defenders backed off against him. Set up Bruno for opener with a fine ball over defenders. Got the third, which he needed after a run where he’s not been scoring in the Premier League.

Juan Mata - N/A. On for Fernandes after 83. Couldn’t repeat his heroics of his last visit to Juventus when his free-kick won the game in November 2018, but pleasing to see him on the pitch again. Reuters

Amad Diallo - N/A. On for Mason Greenwood after 83 minutes to make his United debut in the country where he grew up as a footballer before his recent move to England. Rough introduction, but he deserves the minutes he’s getting. PA

Bruno Fernandes scored twice to set up Manchester United's emphatic 4-0 win over Real Sociedad in their Europa League round of 32 first-leg on Thursday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United started the game – played in Turin due to Covid-19 travel restrictions between Spain and the UK – well.

Fernandes opened the scoring after 27 minutes following a mix-up between Remiro and defender Robin Le Normand. It was the Portuguese's 20th goal of the season.

He scored his second from the edge of the box on 57 minutes, a goal initially ruled out for offside but corrected by VAR. Marcus Rashford added the third eight minutes later before Daniel James made it four.
