Eddie Howe refused to blame goalkeeper Artur Boruc for Bournemouth’s hammering at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.
Harry Kane returned to form for Spurs scoring three times in a 5-1 victory, with Boruc at fault for three of Tottenham’s goals.
“They were self-inflicted, that’s evident,” Howe said of Tottenham’s goals. “There won’t be fingers pointed. We take collective responsibility. But there is a need going forward that we can’t keep giving goals away.”
For Spurs, the win means they remain unbeaten in the league since the opening weekend of the season as Mauricio Pochettino’s side move to within five points of leaders Manchester City.
Seeing Kane return to form was a highlight for the Argentine, especially after his decision to rest his main striker in Thursday night’s Europa League defeat to Belgian side Anderlecht.
“I never had any doubts about him, but it was very important hat-trick for him,” Pochettino said. “It’s important for him to learn from that period. It happens in football. I’m happy because he’ll become a much better player after such a tough period.
“He will score a lot of goals, but football is not about just scoring. He works very hard for the team.”
Earlier, a furious Steve McClaren criticised referee Robert Madley after seeing Newcastle United slip to a record sixth successive derby defeat by Sunderland in controversial circumstances.
The Newcastle manager hit out at the official for not awarding his side a penalty and then pointing to the spot at the other end and sent off captain Fabricio Coloccini for a barge on Steven Fletcher in an explosive end to the first half at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland took advantage of what manager Sam Allardyce later said had been a stroke of luck to run out 3-0 winners and claim their first league victory of the campaign at the 10th attempt.
“I don’t think frustrated is the word; angry, disappointed,” McClaren said. “Two decisions have cost us a game in which we were totally dominant, looked a very good side, frustrated the crowd. It was a perfect performance in the first half.”
