BRIGHTON PLAYER RATINGS: Robert Sanchez 6 - Almost picked up an assist as Raphael Varane deflected his pass into the path of Danny Welbeck who couldn’t convert. Didn’t have much to do but caught a Juan Mata volley that his compatriot connected well with. Getty

Joel Veltman 6 - Took no chances with some no nonsense defending. Could have been a bit more accurate with his passing but looked to play progressively in favour of safe options. EPA

Lewis Dunk 7 - Excellent distribution from the back helped Brighton begin attacks quickly. Didn’t really get out of second gear defensively, with Manchester United rarely threatening. Getty

Marc Cucurella 9 - Put plenty of pressure on Anthony Elanga and often won their battles on the left flank before getting crosses into the box. A solid display from the 23-year-old. An excellent finish doubled Brighton’s lead in the 49th minute. PA

Solly March 6 - Worked hard throughout the game and rarely put a foot wrong. Got forward when he could to get crosses into the box. Getty

Yves Bissouma 7 - Pressed well when Manchester United advanced and made it difficult for them to play through Brighton’s midfield. Getty

Moises Caicedo 7 - A powerful drive from range fired Brighton into the lead as Caicedo reacted quickly to a ball bouncing out from the Manchester United box and had one thing in his mind. Getty

Leandro Trossard 8 - Kept calm under pressure and his ability to take a moment to pick out the right pass was no better exemplified than when he picked out Cucurella who finished with intent. Got on the scoresheet by reacting first to Welbeck’s chip that was tipped into his path. Getty

Pascal Gross 9 - Played progressively and was dangerous with his set piece delivery, almost connecting with Welbeck with a well-taken free-kick in the first half. A good finish put Brighton into cruise control to make it 3-0 close to the hour mark. Unplayable once Brighton found their top gear. Getty

Danny Welbeck 8 - Worked hard to run the channels and held the ball up well. Close to scoring when Varane’s careless play diverted Sanchez’s clearance into his path. Welbeck’s movement was too much for the United defence at times, and he almost finished perfectly with a chip that was eventually converted by Trossard. Getty

SUBS: Adam Webster (MacAllister 67') 6 - Enjoyed the rest of the game. Manchester United simply weren’t at the races on the day.

MANCHESTER UNITED PLAYER RATINGS: David De Gea – 5. Beaten along the floor by United fan Caicedo after 15. Fifty four goals conceded in the league this season and a goal difference of plus one. Abysmal defence in front of him. Getty

Diogo Dalot – 4. Adjusted to head a March cross away on six and had his work cut out as Brighton attacked down both sides. Booked at the start of the second half after diving into a tackle and then at fault for two of Brighton’s goals, when he was too deep. Brighton’s players pushed United’s full-backs deep. Reuters

Victor Lindelof – 3. The opening goal went right through his legs and he struggled all afternoon against an excellent Brighton side who won at home for the first time in 2022. Reuters

Raphael Varane – 3. Messed uo a high ball which almost led to Welbeck putting Brighton 2-0 up on 42. Looked startled in the second half as the home side cut through United time and again. AP

Alex Telles – 3. Weak headed clearance before opening goal, then dived in to cut a pass out on 34 and missed the ball as Brighton attacked down both wings against full-backs who were there to be got at. Getty

Nemanja Matic – 5. Sixth successive game and led United’s first attack on 19, then skewed a shot over a minute later, but he was still United’s best player. The bar was low, but bizarre that he was taken off at half-time. AFP

Scott McTominay – 4. Unable to block the opening shot for the goal, lost possession after taking too much time on the ball on 34. AFP

Bruno Fernandes – 4. One of his best United games came at Brighton. It was during lockdown, not when his own form locked down. Swerved a 68th minute shot at Sanchez but that was about it. Getty

Juan Mata – 5. First back-to-back appearances of the season but couldn’t match his performance against Brentford as he and his overwhelmed team started poorly and got even worse. Reuters

Anthony Elanga – 3. Barely had the ball, barely involved in the game, smashed in a poor tackle. Taken off at half time. AFP

Cristiano Ronaldo – 3. Looking to score in fifth successive league game. If only. Booked on 44 after a frustrated tackle and not at it all afternoon. Getty

SUBS: Edinson Cavani (Matic 45’) – 6. On for a role in United’s fifth straight away defeat. He hadn’t played in any of them because he’s barely played. His header was United’s best moment of United’s day and his effort couldn’t be faulted. Goal disallowed for offside. PA

Fred (Elanga 45’) – 5. On for Elanga at half time and one of United’s better players. Reuters

Harry Maguire (Mata 70’) – 6. Back after a knee injury and being left out for a few games. On for Mata and got his head to a corner which led to an offside goal. PA

Brighton and Hove Albion trounced Manchester United 4-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, as Ralf Rangnick's side suffered a fifth straight away defeat with another woeful defensive display.

Moises Caicedo netted his first goal in a Brighton shirt in the 15th minute when he took advantage of the ball ricocheting off Alex Telles to tuck a low drive inside the post from outside of the box.

Marc Cucurella made it 2-0 after the break, firing into the roof of the net from close range.

Pascal Gross then steered a shot past David de Gea before Leandro Trossard added the fourth when Diogo Dalot’s clearance bounced off his chest and into the United goal.

The hosts continued to pick holes in the United defence and piled on the pressure, but could not add to their tally.

United attempted to fight back but a strong goalkeeping performance from Robert Sanchez kept them out.

United have now conceded 56 goals in the Premier League this season, their worst defensive record in a single campaign in the competition.

The result means it is now mathematically impossible for sixth-placed United to qualify for the Champions League, as they sit five points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal with one game left to play.

Brighton are ninth, five points off a Europa Conference League spot with two remaining matches.
