Floyd Mayweather warns Manny Pacquiao: ‘Being reckless can get you knocked out’

LAS VEGAS // Floyd Mayweather Jr says he can envision promoting a boxing event in the UAE but doubts his ring career will last long enough for him to fight in the Gulf.

He also is amused that Manny Pacquaio might have “surprises” for him when they meet in the ring in Las Vegas on Saturday, and says the Filipino’s “reckless” style could lead to serious injury.

In an interview with The National at the MGM Grand on Tuesday, Mayweather was reminded that in February 2014 he had said: “I don’t know that I would want to fight one of my last fights in Dubai.”

Not surprisingly, the unbeaten American shifted into defence mode. “I don’t recall saying that I would not fight in Dubai or Abu Dhabi,” he said. “Can you please show me where I said that?”

After reminding him of his interview, he said: “I probably said, as of right now I believe in loyalty. Of course, you know, I’ve been to Dubai but I’ve never been to Abu Dhabi but Floyd Mayweather loves everyone.

“I have just one fight left and after that, I’m gone from this sport. What I’ll leave behind is my legacy as the best ever.”

Mayweather earlier made a immodest entry at the MGM Grand to kick off “Fight Week”, preceded by a marching band and surrounded by his entourage. He addressed the masses before carving out one-on-one time for several journalists.

“Like I said before, Showtime, MGM Grand, all the different social outlets and the fans, I’m thankful to be where I’m at,” he said. “As of right now, my deal is with Showtime and I’ve been with the MGM Grand for 19 years and it’s truly a blessing.”

The UAE and the region do not have much boxing history, but Mayweather, 38, said that could change when he shifts into a role as a promoter. “Yes, absolutely, we look forward to coming to the Middle East and putting on Mayweather Promotions boxing shows, the best in the business,” he said.

When informed that Manny Pacquiao told The National he had "surprises" in store for him, Mayweather seemed disinterested.

“One thing everybody plans for is to come forward and throw a lot of punches,” he said. “They think it works but it hasn’t worked in 19 years. If that’s his game plan, then we’ll just have to see how everything breaks down.”

He added: “Pacquiao would be a better fighter if he wasn’t so reckless. It’s a gift and a curse. He’s won a lot of fights by being reckless. But, also, being reckless can get you knocked out. Getting knocked out in a harsh way can affect you in the long run.

“People have criticised me for being a defensive fighter, but last night when I was at home sitting with my mother and my daughter, I thought to myself, ‘I’m proud of myself.’

“To be in a sport for 19 years, the main thing is I’m going to get out of the sport and still have a sharp mind.”
