The world championship leader clocked a time of 1 minute 51.746 seconds around the damp Silverstone circuit to edge out Red Bull Racing's Mark Webber by just 0.047secs. A heavy rain storm forced the session to be stopped half way through part two of the session, with proceedings resuming an hour later. Michael Schumacher was third in his Mercedes GP ahead of world champion Sebastian Vettel, with Alonso's Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa completing the top five. It was a disappointing day for McLaren-Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton could do no better than eighth, with Jenson Button being eliminated in the first part of qualifying, ensuring he starts 18th.
