Lewis Hamilton breathed yet more life into the 2016 Formula One drivers' championship as he came out on top to win the Canadian Grand Prix, while his Mercedes-GP teammate and championship leader Nico Rosberg finished down in fifth.
The Briton is now only nine points behind the German in the standings thanks to back-to-back wins in Monaco and Montreal.
Hamilton's success came despite giving up the lead from pole position on Turn 1 to Sebastian Vettel, whose Ferrari hared round the outside of both Mercedes as Hamilton and Rosberg rubbed tyres.
There was no lasting damage to either car this time – unlike in Spain when a collision took both drivers out of the race – but Rosberg was forced off the track and dropped down the field as Vettel and Hamilton sped off into the distance.
While that duo traded the lead several times, Rosberg had to battle his way through the field from 10th position.
Some fine passing moves from the German were mixed with frustration as he struggled to get past the likes of Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo. Rosberg proved that it was not just Hamilton's Mercedes that has been suffering glitches and bad luck this season as he had technical issues while trying to pass Max Verstappen in fourth place and then spun while behind the same Red Bull driver on the final lap.
Hamilton held off a late push from Vettel and capitalised on two errors from the German in the chicanes to clinch the win at Montreal for the fifth time.
“Today I had another really bad start, not sure why,” Hamilton said. “I feel very grateful that Nico and I didn’t damage our cars. Then I had fun chasing down this guy [Vettel].”
