Evans treble is not enough

A hat-trick of tries from Thom Evans was not enough to save Glasgow Warriors from a third successive loss in the Heineken Cup as they were beaten by Bath last night in Pool 5. While Evans proved lethal as he crossed over three times for the Scottish side, the Warriors defence was less impressive as Bath ran in four scores, which proved enough for their second win in the tournament.

Michael Stephenson scored twice for the English team, while Andy Berne and Shaun Berne also got their names on the scoresheet, with Butch James piling on further misery by kicking 15 points. Tries in the last 10 minutes from Hefin O'Hare and Ruaridh Jackson cut the deficit to just four points for Glasgow, but they couldn't complete a dramatic fightback as Bath held on. In Saturday's late action, England fly-half Toby Flood scored 23 points as Leicester Tigers got the better of Perpignan 38-27 in their Pool 3 encounter. Flood scored a try, kicked four penalties and three conversions for the Guinness Premier League side.

The big winners in the latest round of matches were Ospreys. The Welsh side went try crazy against their Italian visitors Benetton Treviso in the Pool 3 clash as they scored 10 tries in a 68-8 win. Tommy Bowe led the way as he scored five times, with James Hook kicking nine conversions. First half tries from Tom Williams and Jordan Turner-Hall proved to be enough for Harlequins as they battled to a narrow 15-10 win at Stade Francais to make it three wins out of three for them in Pool 4.

In Pool 2, Leinster maintained their grip at the top as they crushed Castres 33-3. Jonathan Sexton was on good form with the boot for the Irish side as he kicked 16 points to help sink the French side. @Email:gcaygill@thenational.ae
