Ilya Kovalchuk capped a three-goal first period for New Jersey as the Devils beat a mistake-prone Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Wednesday.
Kovalchuk scored his NHL-leading fourth short-handed goal, and Patrik Elias and Adam Henrique – who scored twice – also found the net in the opening period as the Devils beat the Flyers for the third time in three games this season. Andrei Loktionov had the neatest goal for New Jersey, with a toe-drag move that deceived Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov at his mercy.
Johan Hedberg had 23 saves for New Jersey, which has won two straight and three of four after a six-game losing streak.
Jakub Voracek and Scott Hartnell scored for the Flyers, who have lost four of five.
Calgary wing Lee Stempniak scored the winning goal in the third period and set up another the Flames' 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
Stempniak broke a 2-2 deadlock 5:37 into the third after a deft set up from Curtis Glencross, who missed the previous two games with a wrist injury. Glencross wheeled deep into the Detroit zone and zipped a pass to the uncovered Stempniak in the slot for his seventh goal of the season.
Glencross added his ninth at 9:12, capitalising on Valterri Filppula's turnover along the side boards. Blake Comeau followed with a goal 48 seconds later to make it 5-2.
Alex Tanguay and Jay Bouwmeester also scored for Calgary, which won its fifth in a row at home.
Niklas Kronwall and Filppula scored for Detroit.
At Montreal, Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller scored in the shootout to give the Montreal Canadiens its fourth straight win 4-3 over the Ottawa Senators.
Eller also scored in the first period and Brendan Gallagher and P.K. Subban added power-play goals in the second for Montreal, while Carey Price made 29 saves.
Mika Zibanejad and Daniel Alfredsson had power-play goals for Ottawa, and Patrick Wiercioch also scored for the Senators.
Wiercioch, a rookie defenseman, scored his third goal in five games to level the scores at 3-3. Wiercioch had no goals in his first 26 NHL games.
Canadiens 4 Senators 3
Lars Eller scored the decisive goal in a shoot-out, and the Montreal Canadiens extended their winning streak to four with a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.
Montreal's Alex Galchenyuk also scored in the tiebreaker, and Carey Price stopped two of Ottawa's three shooters after making 29 saves during the game.
Montreal got two goals with the man advantage in the second period, as Brendan Gallagher and PK Subban put the Canadiens up 3-1. Eller scored in the first period.
Patrick Wiercioch drew Ottawa even at 3 with his third goal of the season 1:50 into the third. Mika Zibanejad and Daniel Alfredsson scored power-play goals for the Senators.
Robin Lehner made 42 saves in his third straight start for Ottawa.
Anaheim Ducks player suspended
Anaheim Ducks play-maker Corey Perry has been slapped with a four-game suspension, without pay, for an illegal hit against Minnesota Wild, the NHL said on Wednesday.
Perry put a late check on Minnesota's Jason Zucker during the second period on Tuesday, earning himself a major penalty for interference and game misconduct.
"Perry delivered a late, illegal check that injured Minnesota forward Jason Zucker," Rob Blake, the NHL's Department of Player Safety, explained in a video.
"Perry [had] enough time to avoid this violent check or, at the very least, minimise it more significantly."
A former Hart Trophy winner, Perry is among the Anaheim team leaders with nine goals and 15 assists on the season.
The Ducks have the second best record in the NHL with 41 points, and will begin campaign without Perry on Thursday against the Dallas Stars.
