Ahead of the 20th running of the Dubai World Cup on Saturday, Geoffrey Riddle gathers the recollections of the men who figured prominently on the night the world's richest horse race was launched.
I had been to Dubai before the World Cup because I was lucky enough to win the jockey competition at Nad Al Sheba when it was first built. I did not ride a lot of track work when I got there because I had done my home work and Soul Of The Matter was training well and Mr Mandella and I had come up with our strategies. Even with so much money on the line, I was very comfortable going in to the race. I only made a few appearances at the parties because when they were held we were on top of the race and it was game time for me. That said, I was ready, confident and treated it a bit like a holiday.

At the furlong pole I would have bet everything I had that I was going to win the race. I stuck our nose out, but I could see the champion’s eye staring my horse down and he started to come back. I could not believe it and all I could think was ‘Arrrgh, no!’
There was no shame in running second to Cigar, but it still leaves a sick feeling that we got so close and did not pull it off. I had a great night, don’t get me wrong. I had won the Dubai Duty Free on Kiaran McLaughlin’s Key Of Luck so to have pulled that off in the world’s richest race would have been unbelievable. There had not been a race worth that much like it, so it still feels like the one that got away, even today.
I went back and won it on Silver Charm in 1998, so Nad Al Sheba, the World Cup and those times hold a very special place in my heart.
Times have changed now. The new racecourse at Meydan is state of the art, but Nad Al Sheba had a really special character to it – it was one of my favourite racecourses to ride in the world because of the unique shape of it. It had an elbow that took you out right-handed with a sweeping turn a bit like Belmont in America. The new course is just a pure oval, which is very Westernised.
