DUBAI // The iftar enjoyed by Ghaith Jalajel, the Jordanian hooker, will have tasted even sweeter than usual yesterday evening.
The Dubai Exiles No 2 touched down in time just as his try all but sealed a 42-14 opening day Gulf Cup victory over Muscat.
Jalajel's score, which put the Exiles 26-0 up, followed shortly after sunset and he celebrated by breaking his day-long fast with a well-earned banana. A dramatic storm just before kick-off did little to affect the preparedness of the winning team as strong winds blew down the fence that rings the neighbouring netball court at The Sevens, and there was even some unseasonal rainfall.
Jalajel's front-row colleague Chris Deacon also went over for the victors and John Beeton dotted down in the corner.
The rest of the scoring was left to Paul Beard, the Arabian Gulf full-back, whose 27-point haul included two tries.
