Sydney Thunder players honoured Australia's indigenous culture on Saturday by wearing specially-designed jerseys during their Big Bash League match against Hobart Hurricanes.

The kit is designed by Sydney-based Rheanna Lotter and is said to symbolise 'the connection, commitment and inclusivity of the Thunder Nation', the Sydney team posted on their website.

According to the team, the kit has a large circle which represents the team while smaller circles represent the supporters, staff and the wider community.

Sydney Thunder fast bowler Brendan Doggett , who is a Worimi native, hoped the initiative will inspire young indigenous cricketers across Australia.

“I reckon it looks awesome and it’s a good stepping-stone towards acknowledging indigenous culture in Australian cricket,” Doggett was quoted as saying by the franchise website. “My culture is a massive part of me so I definitely will be wearing it with pride.

“It’s great to see so many indigenous cricketers breaking through the professional ranks now. I think it’s important for us to be role models for these kids and show them that cricket is another avenue to expand themselves and learn about themselves.

“It’s always been a goal to use the BBL as an avenue to promote our game in indigenous communities and by wearing playing shirts like this, it’s going to help leaps and bounds."

Sydney won the match by four wickets with two balls to spare after Alex Hales hit 55 during their chase of 163.
