MIRPUR, bangladesh // Shakib Al Hasan claimed three wickets to restrict New Zealand to 107 for 3 in reply to Bangladesh’s 282 on a rain-interrupted second day of the second Test on Tuesday.
Tea was enforced 26 minutes earlier than scheduled after rain thwarted play. The rain never relented and play was suspended for the day.
Play will resume 30 minutes earlier on Wednesday if the weather permits.
Before the downpour stopped play, Ross Taylor was on 37, and Kane Williamson, who returned to batting after a blow on the cheek off Rubel Hossain, was 28 not out.
Left-arm spinner Shakib had 3 for 25.
Rubel made an excellent catch at deep square leg to remove skipper Brendon McCullum on 11, the only wicket in the middle session.
Earlier, Shakib took two wickets in three deliveries to send New Zealand to lunch at 32 for 2.
Peter Fulton scored 14 and Hamish Rutherford made 13 in a 31-run opening stand before Shakib struck with the last ball of his first over.
He had Rutherford caught at short leg to end the 13th over, then trapped Fulton lbw with a quicker delivery with the second ball of his second over at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
In an eventful morning session, New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner returned 5 for 64 and legspinner Ish Sodhi took 3 for 59 as Bangladesh lost their last five wickets for 54 runs.
Wagner struck early in overcast conditions, taking out Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim on 18, after he added just four runs to his overnight total. Wagner also dismissed first-Test century-maker Sohag Gazi (14) and Rubel (4) to pay back selectors who favored him at the expense of left-arm spinner Bruce Martin.
Sodhi took advantage of some turn and bounce in the pitch and claimed the wickets of Nasir Hossain (19) – to a ball that spun sharply – and Abdur Razzak (13).
For Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal top-scored with 95, followed by Mominul Haque (47) and Marshall Ayub (41).

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.
Popular Vote Tally
The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.
