Chris Jordan is hoping the extraordinary double Super Over win over defending champions Mumbai Indians will help charge a run to the IPL playoffs for Kings XI Punjab. The England fast bowler bowled the second tie-breaker over, after the sides could not be split either in the first 20 overs, or the next set of six balls. It was an unbelievable night at the Dubai International Stadium when history was made, and new playing regulations were rolled out for the first time. Jordan had been inches short of his ground trying to make the second run that would have given Kings XI victory on the last ball of the match. That meant both sides ended on 176. Jasprit Bumrah kept KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda to just five runs in the first tie-breaker over, and it appeared Mumbai were home from there. Somehow, though, Mohammed Shami restricted Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock to just five singles in reply. De Kock – as Jordan had been in the 40th over of the match - was run out by inches off the last ball as a tumbling Rahul flicked the ball onto the stumps. Jordan was tasked with bowling the next over, as none of the participants of the first one were permitted to contest the second – as per new tie-breaker regulations. Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya took that over for 11 – but crucially Mayank Agarwal prevented that from being 15 with a sensational stop on the boundary line off Pollard. Chris Gayle hit the first ball of the Trent Boult super over for six, and Agarwal hit two boundaries himself to win it. “I feel like, the way we played this season, a lot of matches could have ended with us on the winning side,” Jordan said. “That wasn’t the case, but I think in the last two games especially, the kind of team spirit and camaraderie we have been showing as an entire team, unit and franchise has been second to none. “I’m just glad we are getting a little bit of luck going our way now. “We can’t rest on it, but we must enjoy nights like tonight when you think you have it won, then you’ve lost it, then you’ve won it again. “The most important thing is that we got the win, and hopefully this can give us some momentum.” Punjab had been in last place going into the match, and defeat would have all but ended their chances of progressing to the knockout stage. Now, though, they are within four points of fourth-placed Kolkata Knight Riders. Mumbai remain second on 12 points. It was Mumbai’s second Super Over loss in Dubai, after they had earlier suffered a similar fate against Royal Challengers Bangalore. “It is cricket – the same 22 yards, just a different environment,” Pollard said of their odd record in Dubai. “When you look at it, we weren’t rolled over. In the two games that were Super Overs. It is just a matter of pinpointing the areas we can improve as a team. “Once we do that, we will come back better as a unit. We have been playing some very, very good cricket. Let’s not take away that fact. “Having said that, we weren’t able to cross the line today, and that is what we accept.”
