CHENNAI SUPER KINGS RATINGS: Faf du Plessis – 9.5. One of the few Chennai players who had been consistently fine throughout the tournament so far, but he really stepped it up with 87 not out. Sportzpics for BCCI

Shane Watson – 9.5. If anything signalled the fact one of the IPL’s all-time greats was well and truly back, it was his 101 metre six off Bishnoi. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ambati Rayudu – 5. There cannot have been many times he has been listed to bat at No 3 in a side chasing 179, and not made it to the crease. Sportzpics for BCCI

Kedar Jadhav – 5. Not required to bat, but he did manage to incur the wrath of the bowler Sam Curran with his fielding. Sportzpics for BCCI

MS Dhoni – 6. Dhoni never looks unduly stressed, but he must have had his down moments over the past month or so. An emphatic win will be just the pick-me-up. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ravindra Jadeja – 7. One for 30 off his four overs, including the wicket of Mandeep. He held a towering catch to dismiss Pooran, too. Sportzpics for BCCI

Sam Curran – 5. Had less of an impact than he had to date, as his experienced colleagues started to prove their worth. Went for 31 off three. Sportzpics for BCCI

Dwayne Bravo – 6. Still feeling his way back after injury, and he lacked an edge with the ball, going for 38 from his four. Sportzpics for BCCI

Deepak Chahar – 7. It seemed odd he did not complete his four-over quota given he went for just 17 from his first three overs. Sportzpics for BCCI

Shardul Thakur – 7. He picked up Pooran and Rahul in successive balls – Pooran on the boundary, Rahul with some fine bowling. Sportzpics for BCCI

Piyush Chawla – 5. Two overs for 22 for the leg-spinner who must be pining for the turning tracks back at home. Sportzpics for BCCI

KINGS XI PUNJAB RATINGS: KL Rahul – 8. He remains in princely touch, with 63 to go with the century and 69 he made last week. Sportzpics for BCCI

Mayank Agarwal – 6. Traded places again with his captain and opening partner for the orange cap as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, but fell for just 26 this time. Sportzpics for BCCI

Mandeep Singh – 6. Injected some spark into the innings with two sixes in a quick-fire stay worth 27. Sportzpics for BCCI

Nicholas Pooran – 8. Violent hitting, which watchers of the game in the UAE have grown used to over the past couple of years from the West Indies batsman. Sportzpics for BCCI

Glenn Maxwell – 6. Only had seven balls to show his worth at the end of the innings, and could only get one of them away to the boundary. Sportzpics for BCCI

Sarfaraz Khan – 6. Typically creative batting earned him 14 from nine balls, and he was fully committed in the field, too. Sportzpics for BCCI

Chris Jordan – 4. Returned to the side on his 32nd birthday, but he might have wished he hadn’t given how hard the going was for the bowlers. Sportzpics for BCCI

Harpreet Brar – 5. It was his first game of the tournament and it showed. He struggled to maintain any pressure on the batsmen, as he went for 41. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ravi Bishnoi – 5. No joy with the ball, but at least he tried something different, with the quirky angle of his run up in his final over. Sportzpics for BCCI

Sheldon Cottrell – 7. Earns two extra points for diving headlong to stop a four when the game was long since lost. It was the sort of commitment all teams need. Sportzpics for BCCI

Mohammed Shami – 5. Looked totally dejected by the end, which is a stark contrast to the confident figure he struck at the start of the campaign. Sportzpics / BCCI

The 'Dad’s Army' of the IPL roared back into form as Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis guided Chennai Super Kings to a 10-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab in Dubai.

The veterans shared the highest partnership ever for Chennai in the IPL, and the highest by anyone against Punjab.

They shared an unbeaten 181 stand for the first wicket, as they hauled in Punjab’s total of 178-4 with 14 balls to spare.

Du Plessis, 36, top scored with 87 not out, and Watson, 39, hit 83 not out. Both faced the same amount of deliveries – 53.

The win lifted Chennai off the foot of the table, where they were replaced by Punjab.
