Manchester City manager Mark Hughes saw his side finish top of their Uefa Cup group - despite being second best in Spain. FC Twente's defeat by Paris St Germain means City will now face a third-placed team from one of the other groups in the draw. The home side took the lead in the 18th minute when the City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel failed to deal with a routine cross from Oscar Serrano. Schmeichel only succeeded in pushing the ball into the path of Jonathan Pereira, who tapped the ball home. After 30 minutes Santander extended their lead with Serrano starting and finishing the move in superb style. He found Pereira with a glorious 30-yard ball then took the return in his stride before finishing smartly. Juan Valera made it 3-0 after 55 minutes but the substitute Felipe Caicedo pulled a goal back for City in stoppage time when he headed in a cross from Pablo Zabaleta - the Ecuadorian's first goal for the club.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have also reached the knockout stages following a 2-2 draw with Spartak Moscow at White Hart Lane in Group D. Tom Huddlestone's header earned Spurs the point they needed against Spartak but it was an uncomfortable night for Harry Redknapp's men. Redknapp insists it is easier to get in this competition than it is to get out - and his players proved him right with a woeful first 45 minutes at White Hart Lane where Artem Dzuba scored twice for the Russians. It took Luka Modric's first Spurs goal and Huddlestone's leveller to earn the draw they needed to be sure of a path out of Group D.
