BSAK students given a golfing lesson by teachers in James Cup

The teachers of British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) proved that modern golf is not just a young man's game when they defeated their pupils in the weekend's annual James Cup.

BSAK's more experienced players took the honours by winning 3 - over four matches at the Capital's City Golf Club.

The format was pairs better ball in match-play over nine holes.

And this Ryder Cup-style event drew a big crowd for all four matches, which produced some impressive play.

The student team, captained by Ross Canning, could boast four players who had a handicap of six or under.

However, the first teacher's pair of captain Stuart Blan and Mark Chadwick put down a marker with a comprehensive 4&3 win over Canning and James Camp.

The second match saw elder statesmen John Craig and Mike Edgar face Sean Tierney and Tom Morgans in a much closer affair.

Morgans birdied the seventh to put his team one-up, but they let things slip and Edgar's par on the ninth was good enough for a draw after they also won the penultimate hole.

Third out on the course were teachers Charlie Davies and Alex Wells against Darrach Mallon and Alex McDonald.

The McDonald-Mallon pairing held the sixth and had a tap in for holding the seventh, when Wells produced something special when he chipped in off the green to take the hole.

This seemed to affect the youngster's confidence and, incredibly, the staff won the eight and then a superb Davies chip to the ninth set up a par and victory.

The last group saw David Edwards and Aubrey Roberts go quickly two up against the students' stronger paring of Ronan Hall and Johnny McLeod. The two holes had been won by Roberts, who was the highest handicapper on the staff team.

And the teachers did enough to hold on for overall victory.
