Aston Villa 1 West Bromwich Albion 1
Aston Villa Bent 80'
West Brom Long 51'
Man of the match
James Morrison (West Brom)
Birmingham // The significance lay not so much in the statistic as in the message it sent.
The 150th goal of Darren Bent's prolific career spared Aston Villa a derby defeat and enabled him to make his point to Paul Lambert, his manager.
Because, for the first time since he signed from Sunderland, Bent was dropped for a league game.
Having already lost the captaincy this season, he also lost his place. Yet whatever reservations Lambert has about Bent as a player, his goals have been a constant over the past decade and the latest, a typically predatory strike, denied West Bromwich Albion the victory that would have propelled them into the top three.
"Darren is a massive part of this club and everyone knows he is a goalscorer," Lambert said. "I need everyone. I need competition for places."
That may not have been what Bent wanted to hear, but, as an £18 million (Dh106.8m) striker ought to, he represented a fine Plan B.
"It's obviously been a difficult couple of weeks, losing the captaincy and to find out I wasn't playing," the striker said.
His omission was a sign of the revolution underway at Villa Park.
This is their Year Zero as Lambert dismantles Alex McLeish's underachieving and unambitious side and introduces a more attacking style of play, younger footballers and his own signings.
Stephen Warnock and Alan Hutton had already been deemed surplus to requirements and Shay Given has been left out, but benching Bent was Lambert's boldest call of all.
But, trailing to Shane Long's goal, the Scot sent for the striker and he delivered.
Albion struggled to clear Charles N'Zogbia's corner and, after Ciaran Clark's shot was blocked, Bent guided his past Ben Foster.
He is the finisher and the finished article, providing a contrast with the man who led the line.
Christian Benteke may prove a rough diamond and has a blend of pace and power to suggest he is a budding Didier Drogba, but his efforts were undermined by erratic finishing.
Most obviously, when he dispossessed Gareth McAuley and cut infield, he blazed a shot wastefully over.
He could have scored again in the second half, when the substitute Gabriel Tamas epitomised Albion's resistance with a goal-saving challenge, but Villa are a side with renewed spirit.
Their comeback, following a fightback to knock Manchester City out of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, made this a profitable few days for Lambert.
"I am thrilled with their effort," he said. "It was outstanding."
Before Bent's introduction, Villa's main threat came from midfield.
Foster tipped a dipping long-range shot from Brett Holman over and pushed a left-footed drive from the Australian away. "Two world-class saves," said Lambert.
Even Foster could not deny Bent, however, ensuring he upstaged another striker.
In the sixth minute, Long spurned a glorious chance, heading wastefully wide.
After half time, he had a goal disallowed before finally registering a legitimate, if slightly lucky, strike.
James Morrison sprung the Villa offside trap to accelerate clear on the right.
His low cross was aimed at Long, lurking at the far cross but, in his attempt to intercept, Ron Vlaar sent his attempted clearance into Long and it rebounded into the net.
Fortune almost favoured Albion twice: Long's replacement Romelu Lukaku had a late chance to win it, his shot deflecting off Clark, looping over Brad Guzan and clipping the post.
"The only disappointment was that Romelu didn't get the second goal when he came off the bench," the Albion manager Steve Clarke said. "It is a good result."
It is a fine start, too. Albion are the interlopers in a distinguished top seven.
They were the top team in the Midlands last season and, while honours ended even yesterday, they are the front-runners in the region again.
Villa, meanwhile, have made officially their worst start to a Premier League campaign but there is a sense that, after a traumatic year, a corner is being turned.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Electoral College Victory
Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.
Popular Vote Tally
The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.
