Baniyas look to fight to keep David Trezeguet at club

Baniyas officials are hoping to persuade David Trezeguet not to quit the club.

David Trezeguet's agent is due to meet Baniyas officials over the next 48 hours to discuss the player's intention to quit as the club seek to keep him.

The French 1998 World Cup winner wants to terminate his one-year deal because a calf injury, which has limited him to just two games so far this season, is not improving.

Antonio Caliendo, the Italian agent, confirmed he is due in Abu Dhabi either today or tomorrow for talks with the former Juventus player and Baniyas, who still hold out hope that a compromise can be reached.

"David has a contract with us and [for that reason] he should stay with Baniyas," Musaad Al Harthi, a club spokesperson, said last night.

"He is a great professional and a good person, but he has not played a lot of games and this has been a problem for him.

"We will have a meeting with his agent over the next few days to see what we can be done. At the moment, nothing has happened."

It would seem, however, that Trezeguet's mind is all but made up and, if he did leave, that could well mean the 34 year old would lead to retirement from the game.

The veteran was signed by Baniyas in the summer as the big-name player who could possibly take last season's Pro League runners-up one step further.

He signed a contract reportedly worth €1.6 million (Dh8m) with Baniyas in July, the biggest contract in the club's history.

"I don't know yet what David will do and that is why I need to speak with the club in person," Caliendo said.

Trezeguet has managed just one league game, a home defeat to Al Wasl.

Jorvan Vieira, the coach, who backed the Frenchman to quickly find his form once he got up to full fitness, left the club soon after that match.
