Arabian Gulf League: Al Wasl sign Baniyas striker Andre Senghor

The Senegalese striker has agreed terms and is moving to Zabeel Stadium to complete Al Wasl's foreign quota, writes John McAuley.

Al Wasl have signed Andre Senghor, the Senegalese striker, from Baniyas.

The forward, who led the Abu Dhabi club in scoring last season with 17 goals in 27 domestic matches, passed a medical late on Tuesday night after agreeing terms with the Zabeel Stadium side.

Senghor becomes Wasl's fourth foreign player for the 2013/14 campaign, and joins other recent recruits Kaio, the Brazilian striker signed from Yokohama FC, and Milan Susak, the Australian who spent six months from January on loan with Iran's Sepahan. Mariano Donda, the influential Argentine playmaker, has recovered from a knee injury that ruled him out for most of last season.

However, the acquisition of Senghor may be viewed as Wasl's shrewdest piece of business this transfer window, as the frontman, 27, is a proven scorer in the UAE top flight. In the past four seasons, he has notched 60 league goals in 83 matches, including 18 in 2010/11 to secure the Golden Boot.

The tall Senegalese is particularly dangerous in the air, but has more refined technical skills than might be expected in a man of his height.

Senghor was considered surplus to requirements at Baniyas after the club invested heavily these past few months in young, South American talent. Carlos Munoz, the Chilean forward, and Luis Farina, the Argentine playmaker, have been added to an expatriate roster that already contained Senghor, Christian Wilhelmsson and Abdulsalam Al Mukhaini.

As the Arabian Gulf League allows only four foreign players per team, Baniyas were willing to listen to offers for Senghor. The powerful attacker, who has also previously represented Al Ain, had extended his contract with Baniyas last summer, with the deal due to expire at the end of next season.
