DUBAI // Al Wasl have completed their foreign quartet for the 2015/16 season with the signing of Brazilian striker Edgar Bruno from Al Shabab.
Bruno, 28, has been one of the leading strikers in the Arabian Gulf League since arriving from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2012, scoring 51 goals in 90 appearances for the Dubai club.
He endured a lean spell last season, however, managing only eight goals in 25 matches. That prompted Shabab to replace Bruno with fellow Brazilian Jo as the spearhead of their attack.
Alerted to his availability, coach Gabriel Calderon instructed the Wasl board to move for Bruno and they have now signed the target man on a two-year contract.
“The coach Calderon has a lot of confidence in the player and he wanted us to sign him,” Hamid Yousuf, the Wasl team director, told media at the player’s presentation on Wednesday, adding that the Brazilian will now travel to the Netherlands to join up with his new teammates at their training camp.
The signing of Bruno completes the club’s overseas quartet with the Dubai club having retained the services of Portuguese midfielder Hugo Viana and the Brazilian forwards Fabio Lima and Caio.

What is graphene?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged like honeycomb.
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were "playing about" with sticky tape and graphite - the material used as "lead" in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But as they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment had led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
At the time, many believed it was impossible for such thin crystalline materials to be stable. But examined under a microscope, the material remained stable, and when tested was found to have incredible properties.
It is many times times stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. It is electrically and thermally conductive but also transparent. The world's first 2D material, it is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair.
But the 'sticky tape' method would not work on an industrial scale. Since then, scientists have been working on manufacturing graphene, to make use of its incredible properties.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their discovery meant physicists could study a new class of two-dimensional materials with unique properties.

Countdown to Zero exhibition will show how disease can be beaten
Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease, an international multimedia exhibition created by the American Museum of National History in collaboration with The Carter Center, will open in Abu Dhabi a month before Reaching the Last Mile.
Opening on October 15 and running until November 15, the free exhibition opens at The Galleria mall on Al Maryah Island, and has already been seen at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
