Abrasive Istanbul will take three tyre stops

Drivers are expected to make a minimum of three tyre stops during Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix.

That is the prediction of Paul Hembery, the motorsport director of Pirelli, the tyre supplier to Formula One this season.

The challenging Istanbul Park is renown for having a high tyre wear rate.

The circuit's Turn Eight is the longest corner in F1 at more than 600 metres, and the high-speed triple apex left-hander is notoriously tough on tyres.

Lewis Hamilton suffering a tyre blowout there in 2007.

"Istanbul Park should provide the tyres with one of their toughest tests of the year, because of the high-speed corners, abrasive and bumpy surfaces, and huge forces that act on cars," Hembery said.

"The fearsome reputation of Turn Eight is in every way justified, and this should contribute to relatively high levels of tyre wear.

"I expect us to see three pit stops per car, but it will depend on the individual strategies."
