UAE athletes emerged from an international championships in Sharjah as the top Arab nation.
The country's sportsmen and women won 42 medals at the IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sport) World Games 2011, breaking two world and seven Asian records.
Their haul was eight gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals, including two bronze, a silver and a gold won on the last day of the tournament.
The final gold was won by Hassan Malaleih, the Asian games gold medallist in Guangzhou, China, in the javelin wheelchair (F33) competition with a throw of 19.66m, beating his countryman Ahmed Al Housani, who had to settle for silver.
In the discus wheelchair (F55) event, the UAE's Mohammed Al Habsi came third with a throw of 21.55m.
Bulgaria's Mustafa Yuseinov took gold with a throw of 33.93m and his teammate, Ruzhdi Ruzhdi, grabbed silver with a throw of 30.10m.
Mohammed Al Mehairi threw 24.75m to take bronze in the javelin wheelchair (F34), behind Iran's Mohsen Kaeidi, who came first with a throw of 35.93m. Qatar's Abdul Abdul Rahman, came second with a throw of 30.11m.
And Hassan Banihammad clinched the bronze medal in the shot put (35) with a throw of 5.79m, behind Poland's Tomasz Paulinski, who took gold with a throw of 11.31m. Iraq's Jabbar Al Azzawi won the silver with a throw of 11.30m.
The Games saw 11 world records set over six days of competition, in addition to 53 continental records - nine African, 28 Asian, nine European and seven Oceania.
The UAE's Mohammed Al Qaid was the top record breaker, setting two world bests, one in the 200m wheelchair (T34) in a time of 28.39 seconds, and the other in the 1,500m (T34) in 3:32.42, to prove his dominance in the discipline.
He also won gold medals in the 400m and 800m, and a silver in the 100m. Al Qaid, who won a gold medal double in the World Championships in New Zealand, is seen as a leading contender for the Paralympics at London 2012.
In addition to Al Qaid's world and Asian records, he also achieved a continental best in the 800m wheelchair (F34) with a time of 1:51.41 minutes
Asian records were also broken by Mohammed Al Kindi in the 1,500m (T33) in 1:51.41; Al Mallaleih in the javelin competiton; Aishah Salem Bani Khaled in the women's shot put (F33), with a throw of 4.01m; and Sameera Al Sayes in women's shot put (F38), with a throw that travelled 4.12m.
More than 900 competitors from 49 countries took part in the Games, one of the most prominent disabled sporting tournaments in the world, and the first to be held in the Middle East .
