Syria's interim leader Ahmad Al Shara said on Sunday that his administration was working to protect minorities, stressing the importance of coexistence in the multi-ethnic, multi-confessional country after his group removed president Bashar Al Assad.
It is a repetition of his initial promises and comes after protests across the country calling for equal rights and democratic institutions. Still, some minorities are now fleeing the country in fear of retribution.
Syria's new interim government, formed by Hayat Tahrir Al Sham, has appointed two of its key figures to the crucial positions of foreign and defence ministers.
The move has solidified the influence of the rebel group in the country after the collapse of the Assad regime in a sudden offensive two weeks ago.
Asaad Al Shibani was appointed Foreign Minister on Saturday, the state-run Sana news agency reported. He previously led the political department of the rebels' Idlib government. Murhaf Abu Qasra, a senior HTS commander, has been appointed Syrian Defence Minister. He played a significant role in the military campaign that ousted Mr Al Assad this month.
Patients at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza have described to The National harrowing scenes. This past weekend saw another Israeli attack on the centre.
The hospital has been repeatedly attacked in the 14-month conflict, including with ground raids by Israeli troops, leaving it without plumbed-in oxygen supplies and basic necessities.
