The gold standard for television

Have we entered a "golden age of television"? That's certainly the view of Gerhard Zeiler, the president of Turner Broadcasting Systems, parent company of CNN and the Cartoon Network. In the UAE we watch an average of 20 hours of television a week, and as Mr Zeiler noted in an interview with The National, much of that is on digital devices such as tablets and smartphones.

But not all of our viewing comes from traditional broadcasters. The content we consume ranges from home-made cat videos on YouTube to blockbuster mini-series like House of Cards, all 13 of whose episodes were made available on Netflix at the same time.

The number of shows and the means of delivery have improved, but what about the quality? Are Game of Thrones, Kara Para Ask or Arab Idol any better than programmes from the past? What’s your view? Did you prefer it when programmes weren’t available “on demand” but only at the scheduled times?
