City life can be exciting, but reconnecting with nature has its own rewards. Research has established a strong link between spending time in nature and improved mental health and psychological and spiritual development.

For those who would like to have a "healing time" in nature, the Northern Emirates have much to offer. And, as The National reported, tourists from the UAE and around the world have discovered their unspoilt mountains and beaches.

As encouraging as the trends are, more can be done to help people enjoy the attractions away from the hustle and bustle. Airlines and travel agents should encourage the people who fly in and out of the UAE for a week in Dubai or Abu Dhabi to add a few days to their itineraries so they can have an even richer ­Emirati experience. Hikers in Ras Al Khaimah or visitors to beaches in Ajman and Fujairah will have a whole new world opened up to them – and they will be helping the economy.
