A male teacher has been sentenced to two years in prison for assaulting four pupils, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department said on Tuesday.
He was found to have assaulted the four pupils in a classroom at a private school in Abu Dhabi, according to a statement by the ADJD on Tuesday.
The assault resulted in the pupils suffering injuries that left them unable to attend school. The teacher admitted the charges during the investigation and in court, the ADJD added.
He admitted to “assaulting the students, claiming he did so to prevent them from causing chaos and disruption during the lesson, and in an attempt to discipline their behaviour”. CCTV footage corroborated the confession, capturing the violence inflicted on the pupils without justification, the ADJD said.
Committing the offence inside a school during lessons meant the teacher was guilty of a breach of public security and order.
Protecting public order aims to safeguard the fundamental values of society, ensure the safety of its members and maintain respect for the law – principles that directly apply to the case at hand, the court heard.
The teacher will be deported after serving his sentence and will have to cover all the legal costs of the case, Abu Dhabi Criminal Court ruled.
The court was told the defendant’s behaviour represented a blatant breach of existing laws and regulations, underlining the necessity of firm legal enforcement to protect public safety, uphold individual rights and deter violations that subject people to harm or undermine their security and stability.
