Algerians mark 68th anniversary of war outbreak - in pictures

Residents of Algiers watch the parade. Algeria won its independence from France after a gruelling eight-year war that ended with the signing of the Evian Accords in March 1962. EPA

However, memories of France's 132-year occupation continue to blight relations between the two countries. EPA

Despite overtures by French President Emmanuel Macron, a crisis that emerged last year underlined how sensitive the issue is six decades on. EPA

Mr Macron questioned Algeria's existence as a nation before the French occupation and accused the government of fomenting 'hatred towards France'. EPA

In response, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune withdrew his country's ambassador and banned French military aircraft from Algerian airspace. EPA

Normal diplomatic relations have since resumed, along with flights to French army bases in sub-Saharan Africa. EPA
