Ice Warrior Charity Challenge
Dubai – October, date TBC
The UAE's coolest obstacle challenge is held at Ski Dubai each year and it is not for the faint-hearted. The assault course changes each year, but previous editions have included a run up the black slope, cargo net crawl, ball maze and more. Expect to navigate at least 15 obstacles. Desert Warrior Challenge
Dubai – October 21
Although there are shorter distances (5km and 10km), the Desert Warrior Challenge in Dubai has launched a 20km category for the first time this year. It features more than 30 obstacles and promises to challenge even the toughest warriors. Entry costs Dh550 for the extreme category (less for shorter distances). Get serious: Registered participants can train for free once a week at The Warehouse Gym in Al Quoz, Dubai.
Dubai International Triathlon
Dubai – November 12
With a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21.1km run, this half-iron distance is only for the fittest. Entrants will compete in age categories in this event, which is part of the Trifest/DIT weekend. Start time is 6.30am, entry costs Dh900. Register at www.premieronline.com.

Coast to Coast Challenge
Dubai – November 18
Cycle from Dubai, through Sharjah and across the Hajar Mountains to Kalba and then up to Fujairah – a total of 220km with a maximum elevation of 1,300 metres. While the roads are smooth, the mountains will push entrants' limits. Entry costs Dh550, which includes a barbecue and cycle jersey. Visit www.urbanultra.com

Dubai Marathon
Dubai – January 20
Another major event on the UAE fitness calendar, the Dubai Marathon attracts runners from around the world. As well as the 42.2km distance, entrants can compete in a half-marathon, 10km and 4km fun run. The fairly flat course makes it one of the fastest marathons in the world. Wadi Bih Run
Oman – February, date TBC
Enter as a team of five or take on the full 72km on your own. This challenging run along the Khasab Road in Dibba, Oman, reaches a peak of 1,000m, but while difficult, some runners dress up in costume and there is a fun atmosphere.
