App of the month: Map my Walk

Map my Walk

Track your activity with Map My Walk, one of the most downloaded walking apps available. Compatible with iPhone, Android and BlackBerry systems, the app uses your phone’s GPS locator to track your activity, keeping a record of the distance you’ve walked, the speed, elevation, calories burnt and the route travelled.

A great feature of the app is the “route genius”, which suggests walking paths in your vicinity, while the map indicates toilet and car parking facilities, as well as places to stop for refreshments. Users sign in and add their weight and height, which allows the app to establish a calorie burn rate. Before recording a session, the user can select the type of activity, from walking, climbing stairs, treadmill walking, power walking and dog walking, running, hiking, interval training and more. The app also gives direct access to any music stored on the phone and can even let you know when to replace your training shoes, through a nifty function that keeps track of the kilometres you’ve clocked.

Additionally, it syncs with other devices, such as heart-rate monitors and stride sensors, and apps such as myfitnesspal. The app is free to download and use, and offers an upgrade for live coaching, interval training and audio coaching. A free 30-day trial of the upgrade is available.

Water waste

In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.

Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.

A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.

The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
