WHAT I TRIED The "seasonal facial" at the Kempinski Hotel's new spa, Kempinski The Spa, Ajman.
WHAT I WANTED After a long, hot summer, my skin was feeling tired, congested and dry. In and out of the air conditioning and the 46-degree heat, I needed a moisture boost and a deep cleanse.
WHAT HAPPENED The seasonal treatments are based on the European cycle of the seasons and personalised for each person's skin type, so for those looking for some anti-ageing, the "winter" treatment, with its rich, moisturising effect is perfect. For a spot of rejuvenation, "spring" adds light detoxification and cleansing, while "summer" is for rehydrating, cooling and soothing. My therapist recommended I go for "autumn", targeting my naturally dry skin.
The treatment in the newly opened spa began with two rounds of cleansing and toning, using a moisturising cream cleanser, a water-based spritz cleanser and an exfoliating scrub. The organic Daniele de Winter products from Monaco were delightful, the smells alone as good as an aromatherapy session, using plants such as green tea and ylang-ylang.
Next came the moisturising mask, and while that was working its magic, the therapist massaged my arms and feet, neck and shoulders - possibly the highlight of the treatment.
After the facial, I sat up to have a final neck and shoulder massage before being taken to the relaxation room, a nice way to ease into the outside world after a soothing 90 minutes.
THE VERDICT I enjoyed a thorough cleanse as well as an allround relaxing treatment combining the essentials of a good facial (although I would have liked some extractions) with some basic massaging. The prices are reasonable for a five-star hotel, and the stunning, expansive beach on the Arabian Gulf and the Indian restaurant Bukhara make it well worth the trip to beautiful Ajman.
