My friends and I are going to be in Oman for a few days next week and are looking forward to trying out a walking tour or moderate treks in and around the capital. Can you suggest a few routes that we can follow easily, or companies that organise tours?
With temperatures dropping over the next few months, this this is a good opportunity to take in the beautiful landscapes and sights the sultanate offers.
The Ministry of Tourism (www.omantourism.gov.com) recently marked out several walking routes around the capital that visitors can follow themselves, with distinctive brown-coloured signposts pointing out popular trails such as the C38, which starts from Riyam Park that overlooks the Corniche. This easy route ventures deep into Mutrah, one of the oldest parts of Muscat which houses a large number fortresses, including Mutrah Fort, traditional Omani houses, a ruined village and the famous Mutrah Souq. The two-km trail takes around an hour and a half to complete and goes through remote mountain territory, offering stunning views of the port and the Arabian Sea.
Another popular route, the W9, starts in Al Hamra, a small town that is about a 2.5-hour drive from Muscat, and follows a moderate trail to Misfat Al Abriyyin in the Western Hajjar Mountains.
There's plenty of exploring to do here, especially among the ancient ruined stone settlements of Balad Sayt and Hat, which are perched at an altitude of 1,650m. The ascent takes around five hours and the descent around six. Donkeys are available for hire for rides along certain sections of the route.
Oman Trekking Guides (www.omantrekkinguides.com; 00 968 9736 2812) organises easy day trips from Mutrah to explore the cool oases and waterfalls at Wadi Shab, around an hour's walk from the town of Dibba. From 75 Omani rials (Dh716) per person (cheaper for larger groups).
Muscat Diving and Adventure Centre (www.holiday-in-oman.com; 00 968 2448 5663) offers the Grand Canyon balcony walk in Jebel Shams with fantastic panoramas of Wadi Mustal and the Gubrah bowl (about 155km from the city centre). Visitors will also get to picnic in a vast date palm plantation irrigated by intricate natural falaj networks. The walk takes up to seven hours and the difficulty level is moderate. The trip costs 240 rials (Dh2,292) per car for up to four people but is not recommended for children below seven. The price includes a picnic lunch, water and soft drinks, and hotel pick-up and drop-off.

Dirham Stretcher tips for having a baby in the UAE
Selma Abdelhamid, the group's moderator, offers her guide to guide the cost of having a young family:
• Buy second hand stuff
They grow so fast. Don't get a second hand car seat though, unless you 100 per cent know it's not expired and hasn't been in an accident.
• Get a health card and vaccinate your child for free at government health centres
Ms Ma says she discovered this after spending thousands on vaccinations at private clinics.
• Join mum and baby coffee mornings provided by clinics, babysitting companies or nurseries.
Before joining baby classes ask for a free trial session. This way you will know if it's for you or not. You'll be surprised how great some classes are and how bad others are.
• Once baby is ready for solids, cook at home
Take the food with you in reusable pouches or jars. You'll save a fortune and you'll know exactly what you're feeding your child.

Sharrie Williams
The American singer is hugely respected in blues circles due to her passionate vocals and songwriting. Born and raised in Michigan, Williams began recording and touring as a teenage gospel singer. Her career took off with the blues band The Wiseguys. Such was the acclaim of their live shows that they toured throughout Europe and in Africa. As a solo artist, Williams has also collaborated with the likes of the late Dizzy Gillespie, Van Morrison and Mavis Staples.

He has also recorded with the likes of Kem, Dwele and Conya Doss. He comes to Dubai on the back of his new single Pass The Groove, from his forthcoming 2018 album Stronger Still, which may follow his five previous solo albums in cracking the top 10 of the US jazz charts.
Anita Williams
Dubai-based singer Anita Williams will open the night with a set of covers and swing, jazz and blues standards that made her an in-demand singer across the emirate. The Irish singer has been performing in Dubai since 2008 at venues such as MusicHall and Voda Bar. Electoral College Victory
Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.
Popular Vote Tally
The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.
