Braided hair makes a comeback and celebrities are getting in on the act.

Ladies, it's time to join the braidy bunch.

Sporting what promises to be a huge autumn trend, Katie Holmes is the latest celebrity wearing her hair in pretty plaits. She joins the ranks of Marion Cotillard, Blake Lively and Lara Stone who are all fans of a trend that seems to be enjoying something of a renaissance.

The look was in evidence at New York Fashion Week: from half-plaited pigtails at Rachel Antonoff's show and twisted rope-styles at Candela to the equestrian high ponytail do's seen on Ruffian's catwalk.

Far from mirroring the tidy "Heidi hair" much favoured by the Ukranian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, this season's style doesn't require a great deal of hairspray. In fact, the bigger the halo of frizz around your head, some say, the better. Teased tresses and fishtail braids in varying thicknesses covering the crown are the order of the day and the trick (in Katie's case, at least) is to keep the look playful, slightly messy and anything but "1980s dressy".
