Technology to tackle theft?

SOUTH AFRICA // In a bid to tackle the country's escalating car and motorcycle theft problem, South African police have called for the introduction of e-plates for vehicles. These new licence plates feature a global positioning system to track down stolen vehicles. Federal Criminal Investigation Department director, Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin has also called for the introduction of so-called "DNA dots" for cars that store information about the car's make, model and place of sale. However, manufacturers and agents have complained about the cost of this new technology and the Road Transport Department is yet to make a final decision. Last year, 88,820 vehicles were stolen in South Africa.
