Revealed: The car-washing habits of the UAE

On average, motorists have their cars washed four times per month

Despite all the rain, mud and associated detritus that comes with living in the United Kingdom, back home, I probably washed my car every third month. Here, naturally, your four-wheeled pride and joy will have a thin film of dust across it if you park for long enough to grab lunch, so car-washing is rather bigger business. The combination of personal pride and police fines for excessively dirty cars make it a life-admin essential.

A recent survey has found that UAE residents spend between Dh100 and Dh300 per month on car washing, with an average of four washes per month.

The study, which was carried out by the organisers of Middle East Cleaning Technology Week – a catchy little moniker if ever there were one – also found that a majority of 80 per cent of residents prefer to get their cars professionally washed.

But, in addition to those who frequent washing centres and petrol stations for these services, 50 per cent of vehicle owners use mobile car-washing services to fit in with their busy schedules.

“The car cleaning, washing and detailing industry is seeing rapid growth,” says Jayaraman Nair, chairman of VIS Exhibitions & Conferences, which runs MECTW. “Car culture continues to grow in the region and our industry is helping drive this growth.”
