The reigning Miss England is set to hang up her crown and return to her job as a junior doctor to join the fight against the coronavirus. Bhasha Mukherjee had been on a four-week trip to India to carry out charity work as part of her Miss England reign, but became stranded there because of travel restrictions put in place to help stem the spread of the virus. After appealing to the UK government, she was able to return to England and will soon resume her former career as a junior doctor with the NHS. Mukherjee said that after receiving messages from her former colleagues at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire, explaining how the situation was developing, she knew she needed to go back. “I felt a sense of, this is what I'd got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now,” she told CNN India. "It was incredible the way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help.” Mukherjee, 24, is self-isolating for 14 days after the British High Commission in Kolkata helped her to return to London. She will then return to her work as a doctor. “There's no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need,” she said.
