One of the UAE's biggest supermarket chains has installed priority counters for healthcare workers as a way to give back to those at the forefront of the fight against Covid-19. LuLu Hypermarkets launched the initiative over the weekend, designating a number of counters to healthcare workers, allowing them to shop quickly and easily. “Doctors and healthcare workers are at the forefront in this war against Covid-19 and no amount of gratitude is enough to truly thank them for their selfless service,” says V Nandakumar, chief communications officer at LuLu Group. “We thought the least we could do was to make their shopping easier and quicker so that it doesn't further add to their already long and stressful time in the hospitals.” The chain is also making special trolleys available to healthcare workers, which will give them priority in any checkout queue throughout the store. Nandakuma adds: “We don't check anyone's ID proof, as we sincerely believe that no one would misuse this initiative.” The reaction from the general public has been overwhelmingly supportive of the new measures, Nandakuma says. “It has been truly amazing. People have been moving aside to give these workers priority. We thought it would be welcomed, but the response has been incredible.” All 188 LuLu stores across the world have introduced the measures, with two tills in each of its hypermarkets reserved. “It is always tills number one and two,” Nandakumar adds, “so they feel they have the first priority. It is a humble gesture, but we hope it is meaningful for them and they know we all appreciate their dedicated service.”
