Wish List: Spineless Classics poster

"Enjoying a great book need not end when you turn the final page," says Carl Pappenheim, the founder of Spineless Classics. With this in mind, Pappenheim has produced a range of posters featuring the entire text of a novel printed on to a single page, then laid out in a shape that evokes a theme from the plot, so you can read every word of a favourite classic every day - eyesight permitting. Titles so far include Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and Heart of Darkness, but our favourite is this one, Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Pappenheim had the idea for his prints after seeing a fine art architectural drawing being printed, and wondered if he could fit an entire novel printed small enough on a large enough sheet on to a single page. After producing his first poster - Jane Austen's Persuasion - four years ago, Spineless Classics now has a library of eight titles, and plans for further expansion.

"My dream is to get people invigorated by the idea of books as great works of art and to get those who might not otherwise be exposed to them, excited again about classic stories," says Pappenheim. "I'm very keen to offer big discounts for any poster that is purchased for an educational establishment where children and young adults will see them."

He also says that if you have any ideas for books to add, or would like to see your own work immortalised, you can e-mail him at carl@spinelessclassics.com with ideas and requests. The posters are A0 size and are sold unframed. Shipping to the UAE costs £12 (Dh71).

Changing visa rules

For decades the UAE has granted two and three year visas to foreign workers, tied to their current employer. Now that's changing.

Last year, the UAE cabinet also approved providing 10-year visas to foreigners with investments in the UAE of at least Dh10 million, if non-real estate assets account for at least 60 per cent of the total. Investors can bring their spouses and children into the country.

It also approved five-year residency to owners of UAE real estate worth at least 5 million dirhams.

The government also said that leading academics, medical doctors, scientists, engineers and star students would be eligible for similar long-term visas, without the need for financial investments in the country.

The first batch - 20 finalists for the Mohammed bin Rashid Medal for Scientific Distinction.- were awarded in January and more are expected to follow.

The National photo project

Chris Whiteoak, a photographer at The National, spent months taking some of Jacqui Allan's props around the UAE, positioning them perfectly in front of some of the country's most recognisable landmarks. He placed a pirate on Kite Beach, in front of the Burj Al Arab, the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland at the Burj Khalifa, and brought one of Allan's snails (Freddie, which represents her grandfather) to the Dubai Frame. In Abu Dhabi, a dinosaur went to Al Ain's Jebel Hafeet. And a flamingo was taken all the way to the Hatta Mountains. This special project suitably brings to life the quirky nature of Allan's prop shop (and Allan herself!).
