Try this: cupcakes in little jars

A Dubai entrepreneur is taking back the cupcake – by making cake in jars.

Rama Al Jundi counts herself among those who have longed for a better cake-to-icing ratio among the UAE’s plethora of cupcake shops.

“I myself always say that I’d rather have a slice of cake,” says Al Jundi. “A cupcake is really hard to eat! I always use a knife and fork. I want the right amount of icing to the right amount of cake.”

The 24-year-old Dubai-based entrepreneur from Syria was working in public relations when she decided to go into the food business with her husband, Abdulwahab Bahrawi. And so, out of her desire for some portable cake – not in a cup – and inspired by the beautiful images of jar-based foods she saw on Pinterest, Jarful was born. The company, which operates out of a private kitchen in Dubai, offers a selection of desserts lovingly prepared in individual four- and eight-ounce jars that do not have to be returned.

The official launch was in Ramadan, and along with the cakes and a moreish version of ban-offee pie, she offers an assortment of Arab sweets including meghli and muhalabiya.

Al Jundi knew she was onto something when she began offering her delicacies for weddings and private parties and guests showed their appreciation via their spoon.

“People were eating one, two and three jars!” she says.

Although she has just started, Al Jundi has big plans for her little business, including possible launches in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah sometime next year.
