The Filipino food chain, famous for its roast chicken, has restaurants all over the world and the Abu Dhabi branch is the third to open in the UAE. The restaurant came into being after the Second World War, when Maximo Gimenez regularly served American troops stationed in Quezon City food and drinks at his house. Eventually the GIs insisted on paying for their meals, and so the restaurant concept was born. Last night's official launch at the Corniche Apartments building was a chance to sample a few dishes from the menu, including lumpia, pancit canton, sinigang hapon and, of course, the famous fried chicken. A bright green dessert called buko pandan followed – which included ice cream, jelly and rice crispies – and the evening culminated in a rather fun choreographed dance to One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful by the staff and the restaurant's chicken mascot, which was a sight to behold. Based on last night's attendance, Max's is sure to be a firm favourite not just among Filipino expats.
