'Gourmet Afghan street food' restaurant Kishmish opens in Dubai

What’s being touted as the first “gourmet Afghan street and soul food restaurant” in Dubai, has opened its doors in Dar Wasl Mall, in the city’s Al Safa district.

Called Kishmish, the 48-seat eatery has been conceptualised and created by three Afghan women whose families have been friends for generations.

Bonded by a mutual desire to literally bring a taste of their beloved home country to the UAE, for the trio (Iman Nazemi, Fatima Rabbani and Homaira Nasser-zia) the opening of their first restaurant is the culmination of many years of dreaming and planning, having spotted a gap in the market for authentic Afghan cuisine in the emirate.

Named after the Dari term for raisin, which happens to be an integral ingredient of Afghan cuisine, Kishmish has been designed around families and the importance of relaxed social interaction.

Afghan street food might be based around simple ingredients – meats, vegetables and legumes – but the abundance of flavours comes courtesy of cooking methods that have been used for thousands of years.

Infused by the cuisines of surrounding countries (Greece, India, Iran, Mongolia and Arab regions have all made their mark), Afghanistan’s food is a unique experience – something the three founders of Kishmish are now busy introducing to residents and visitors of Dubai.
