Oh, how I love normal women. At the Oscars yesterday, the pressure was on all those attending to wear the biggest, brightest and most newsworthy looks. Two looks have grabbed all the attention however, but perhaps for an unexpected reason. Amid the plunging necklines and huge diamonds, two women stole the show by turning up in a previously worn dress, which in Hollywood is practically career suicide. Under huge pressure to wear something new every time they step out in public, actresses spend a lot of time, money and effort hiring stylists. Read more: Best and worst dressed at the Oscars - in pictures While this is exciting to watch, it has nothing to do with daily life, and even though the escapism is half the attraction, isn't it refreshing to find stars who still think and act like normal people? Tiffany Haddish, who starred in Girls Trip, is one. Haddish openly admits that buying endless new dresses is beyond her budget. A rising star, big enough to be invited to Saturday Night Live, her own film's premiere and the Oscars, Haddish has charmed us by wearing the same dress to all three events. The piece in question is a delicious white halter-neck gown, with a split thigh and heavy embellishment around the neck, by Alexander McQueen. At US$4,000 (Dh14,693), she admits it was a big purchase, so she is intent on getting her money's worth. While she arrived yesterday wearing a traditional Eritrean robe (in memory of her late father), she changed into her fail safe McQueen to take to the stage. And the best thing? Both her and co-presenter Maya Rudolph walked on stage in comfy slippers, carrying their high heels in hand. Bless. Rita Moreno, the 86-year-old veteran of films such as The King and I, donned the same gown she wore in 1962 to accept Best Actress in a Supporting Role for West Side Story. Moreno decided to give it another spin, this time recutting it to be strapless, but with the same magnificent jacquard woven skirt, with great golden roundals. Mixing it with long opera gloves, a simple headband and a heavy collar necklace, she looked fabulous. As the rest of us struggle to get into last year's jeans, that she could slip into a dress she last wore 56 years ago is in itself worthy of an award. ____________________
Read more: Man arrested, accused of stealing Frances McDormand's Oscar trophy 8-year-old Syrian Bana Al Abed makes appearance at the Oscars Oscars 2018: 7 must-see moments 14th time's the charm: cinematographer Roger Deakins finally snags Oscar Oscars 2018: Films that won and the stories surrounding them
