Iconic Michael Jackson jacket up for auction

The garment will be part of a two-day sale that also includes memorabilia that belonged to Prince, Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Madonna

Pop culture and celebrity memorabilia specialists Julien’s Auctions will host a two-day sale that includes items owned by some of the music industry’s most famous and beloved figures.

The jacket that Michael Jackson wore for the duration of his Bad tour is the star item of the sale, and is estimated to fetch up to US$100,000 (Dh367,250). That's a relatively conservative estimate, given that the singer's red and black leather jacket, from the Thriller music video, sold at auction in 2011 for $1.8 million to Texas businessman and philanthropist Milton Verret, the current owner and seller of the Bad jacket.

This black leather jacket is distinctive for its multiple zippers, straps and buckles, and was signed by Jackson on the back in silver marker. You can also get a piece of the King of Pop in the form of a series of never–before–seen original drawings from the collection of plastic surgeon Steven M Hoefflin, Jackson’s friend and art collaborator. Jackson drew the 30 or so marker and pencil illustrations in the 1980s, and they feature self-portraits of Jackson as a child and young man, portraits of his sisters Janet, Rebbie and Latoya, as well as a tracing of his sequined glove and ungloved hand.

Jackson memorabilia aside, the two-day Icons & Idols: Rock 'N' Roll sale is being pegged as one of the most unprecedented auctions of its kind for the sheer volume and range of its offerings. Some other highlights include: the white Collings 290 guitar Price played in his final stage performance at a Ray Charles tribute concert on March 12, 2016; a custom-made jacquard cropped tuxedo jacket worn by Madonna in the 1985 cult classic Desperately Seeking Susan; a group of ¾ inch magnetic tape recordings of tracks from Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland (1968), including a live studio jam version of Voodoo Child with Steve Winwood on organ and Jack Casady on bass with Hendrix's own handwritten notations; a 14K gold TCB "Taking Care of Business" chain necklace and worn by Elvis Presley during his 1969 engagement in Las Vegas; a group of four White Albums, each signed by a band member of The Beatles and one with Yoko Ono's signature; David Bowie's orange boiler suit worn the video for Jazzin' for Blue Jean (1984); and a black Eric Clapton "Blackie" signature Fender Stratocaster signed by Clapton and BB King.

The auction also features items from the collections of “younger” musicians such as Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Cher, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys. Part of the proceeds will go to the MusicCares charity, which provides healthcare and other services to emerging musicians.
