She is one of an elite few that were so renowned, they spawned a new category in the fashion industry.

Claudia Schiffer, together with Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford, is one of the models deemed the "supers", a small group of faces who dominated catwalks and billboards in the 1990s.

The German supermodel, who turns 50 on Tuesday, August 25, rose to fame after being spotted at the tender age of 17.

Starring in campaigns for the likes of Guess, Chanel and Versace, Schiffer – who is married to Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn – became the face of a decade.

And with that came a penchant for nineties trends, from spaghetti-strapped gowns to buttoned-up cardigans worn with bootcut trousers.

However, Schiffer's style has shifted with the years, embracing romantic gowns by Zuhair Murad or disco-worthy minis by Alberta Ferretti.
