Hotels in Mecca face huge logistical challenges as they prepare for Haj, the busiest period of the year, when about 2.5 million Muslims visit the holy city.
"An average of 5,500 pilgrims are based in the hotel during this period," said Shuja Zaidi, the general manager of Makkah Hilton & Towers, which overlooks the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba.
Working hours for staff are extended, and additional temporary staff are brought in, Mr Zaidi said.
Extra beds are provided to cater for numerous requests for triple and quadruple room occupancy.
"We work with the local authorities to ensure the water and electricity supply are able to cope with the additional demand," Mr Zaidi said.
"We have to ensure we have ample food and beverage supplies. Stores are also stocked with necessary dry items to offset any delay in deliveries arising due to the road closures."
The hotel spends weeks preparing for Haj.
"In terms of preparation, we make use of the two months after Ramadan to prepare for Haj - this gives us enough time to liaise with travel agents and local authorities, and prepare our operations for the significant change in pace. Throughout Haj, all hands are on deck."
