Big TVs and big deals on offer at Gitex Shopper in Dubai

DUBAI // Television addicts will be able to watch the world’s largest curved TV at this year’s Gitex Shopper event – but they will need pockets as big its 85-inch screen to take one home.

A price for the ultra-high-definition 4k TV has not been released by its maker Samsung but it is expected to cost more than the 110-inch 4k flat screen, which sells for Dh600,000.

“This is the biggest curved 4k television in the world,” said a Samsung spokesman. “It’s going to be on sale in the UAE by the end of the year and as a result we have yet to set a price for it.”

Samsung will also give a Dh10,000 voucher to those who buy the TV.

Apart from high-end offerings, thousands of bargain hunters are expected to descend on the annual four-day event, which opened yesterday and is being held at the World Trade Centre, for big discounts and bundle deals on gadgets. The biggest deal is being offered by retailer Plug-ins, which is giving away 50-inch Philips flat screen HD TVs.

The company will hand out 12 TVs a day to the first customers who make a purchase, big or small.

“We have many, many offers at Gitex this year but the highlight I would say is our free TV giveaway,” said Vincy Babtist, the supervisor at the Plug-ins stand. “People who spend any amount, no matter how small, will get a free TV. The offer will run every day of the show.

“We have budgeted to give away a total of 48 by the end of the show.”

The store is also offering up to 75 per cent discounts on 3D Blu-Ray players, CD players and speaker sets.

Other retailers were following suit with bargains. A six-piece Mission MX300HCP +MS10 was Dh5,171 and is now Dh1,799, and a Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 DC OS camera lens was Dh1,499 and is now Dh1,290.

“This year we have taken a closer look at the type of bundles we offer during Gitex and have added things that people would really want,” said Neelesh Bhatnagar, chief executive of Emax. “We have put more focus on headsets, smartphones and tablets.”

Sharaf DG is offering a 50-inch 3D Samsung TV for Dh3,699 complete, with a Dh800 voucher, while anyone who buys a Nikon digital camera from Dh2,496 will also receive a smartphone, lens and headphones.

And at the other end of the scale, the latest Aeon Multi-Steam Iron will set you back just Dh120.

Dubai Metro will extend its hours tomorrow for Gitex, with trains starting at 10am instead of 2pm.
