Provision of medical insurance to workers not yet mandatory for Dubai companies

I am looking at taking a new job and while most of the offer looks attractive, the company says it does not have a medical insurance scheme for employees and has no plan to set one up. I understood that the law has changed in Dubai and that companies now have to provide insurance for their permanent employees, so what should I do? TF, Dubai

The law is changing in Dubai but it is not yet mandatory for companies to provide medical insurance. There are specific dates by which companies must comply and that depends on the size of the company. The first deadline is for companies with 1,000 or more staff and they must have a suitable plan in place no later than October 31 this year, followed by companies with 100 to 999 staff in July 2015. The last category is for small companies with fewer than 100 staff and they must comply by June 2016.
