Dubai property owners with a view were in demand on New Year’s Eve, according to listings on Airbnb, the home-sharing platform.
So much so that one owner was quoting US$2,057 for a one-bedroom apartment on Wednesday afternoon for a view of the planned fireworks at Burj Khalifa.
The listing on Airbnb, which features more than a million rooms and homes globally from owners who want to let out to strangers, was one of the last available accommodations in the Downtown Dubai area on the portal.
Another one-bedroom apartment in Burj Khalifa had an asking price of $1,096 for the night.
A house in Al Wasl area with views of the world’s tallest tower in the distance wanted $1,795. And a room overlooking Atlantis The Palm near Dubai Marina Yacht Club was looking for $297 for the night.
The prices reflect the demand for these areas and are higher than hotel room rates for New Year’s Eve accommodation.
The last available room at Al Murooj Rotana was going for Dh4,999.
Hotels such as Address Downtown and Habtoor Grand Beach Resort and Spa and Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach overlooking the Palm were sold out.
Many of the homeowners letting out rooms on portals such as Airbnb are not holiday home operators.
In June, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) required registration from operators who want to manage 20 or more holiday homes in their portfolio.
Eventually holiday home owners in the emirate will need to let through one of these licensed groups. Homeowners with 20 or more units can also apply to become licensed operators.
The licensing is required to ensure “the accommodation is of a quality standard, has the appropriate insurances, and is managed by a qualified party”, according to Helal Saeed Almarri, the director general of DTCM.
