Inside Dubai’s Sustainable City development – in pictures

Inside the show villa at Sustainable City. The city will have 2,700 residents & a daily population of 6,000, according to the developer. The villas are inspired by the urban form and heritage of Dubai’s old ‘Bastakyia’ district.

The aim is to connect solar panels across the development to the electricity grid. There will be 10,000 trees of 50 different types.

“The villas will have electricity bills that are 25 to 30 per cent lower than similar sized villas elsewhere,” said Faris Saeed, the chief executive of Diamond Developers, the real estate company behind the project. The development is planned to have an equestrian centre.

Sustainable City, according to a master plan by Diamond Developers, will use nothing but renewable energy and subsist off a low-waste water system when it is ready to be moved into this year. The area’s plans include an “eco resort” of 143 bungalows and plans to have biodome greenhouses for organic farms, an equestrian club, 10,000 trees, a sustainable hotel and a green-friendly spa. Each home comes with its own solar panels, a free electric buggy and complimentary landscaping for a private organic garden. Horse not included.

Final fittings are put in place by a worker.

InterContinental Hotels Group aims to open the 170-room Hotel Indigo in the development in the first half of 2017.

A horse and cart make their way through Sustainable City for the media event. They were brought in from the Netherlands. To offset the carbon footprint from getting the horse and buggy to Dubai, one way, one would have to plant 113 trees.

The city is located close to Arabian Ranches.
