Dubai South, a new district that will sprawl over 145 square kilometres when complete, yesterday said it had completed the first phase of its aerospace supply chain facility as part of Dubai’s 2030 industrial plans.
The facilities will be built over three phases and when complete next year will span over 157,000 square metres. The second phase will begin in March and is due to complete by the end of this year, while the third phase will start in July and is scheduled to be finished by mid-2018.
“The key advantage of the aerospace supply chain is its strategic location that offers unrivalled access to both the Al Maktoum International Airport and Jebel Ali Port, as well as benefits from Dubai South’s multi-modal logistics platform,” said Ahmed Al Ansari, acting chief executive of Dubai South.
The first phase includes a landside facility stretching over 9,000 square metres and 12 units catering to small and medium enterprises in the maintenance, repair and overhaul sector.
The first tenant in phase one is Lufthansa Technik Middle East, a provider of specialised technical services to the aviation industry.
Dubai in June launched its industrial strategy aimed at generating an additional Dh165 billion for the emirate’s economy by 2030 through the development of six sub-sectors. The strategy also envisages creating 27,000 jobs, and increasing exports by Dh16bn.
The industrial sector contributed 14 per cent to the Dubai’s GDP in 2014.

US tops drug cost charts
The study of 13 essential drugs showed costs in the United States were about 300 per cent higher than the global average, followed by Germany at 126 per cent and 122 per cent in the UAE.
Thailand, Kenya and Malaysia were rated as nations with the lowest costs, about 90 per cent cheaper.
In the case of insulin, diabetic patients in the US paid five and a half times the global average, while in the UAE the costs are about 50 per cent higher than the median price of branded and generic drugs.
Some of the costliest drugs worldwide include Lipitor for high cholesterol.
The study’s price index placed the US at an exorbitant 2,170 per cent higher for Lipitor than the average global price and the UAE at the eighth spot globally with costs 252 per cent higher.
High blood pressure medication Zestril was also more than 2,680 per cent higher in the US and the UAE price was 187 per cent higher than the global price.
