Dubai wildlife moves to new home

More than 900 wildlife species, some of them endangered, have been moved from the Dubai Industrial City site, the developer said yesterday. The relocation occurred before construction began. The animals included such endangered species as gazelles, cape hares and various reptiles. Rashed al Ansari, vice president of Dubai Industrial City, a member of Tatweer, said the captured animals were moved to Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve, which is required to protect wildlife displaced by construction in the emirate.

The animals were taken to the Government reserve within 24 hours of capture, Mr Ansari said. "Our responsibility did not end with the relocation activity. We still continue with the habitat protection programme and conduct a periodic monitoring." Dubai Industrial City, on Emirates Road, covers 560 million square feet, and will include six dedicated manufacturing centres that will encompass food and beverage, base metal, mineral products, chemicals, transport equipment and parts and machinery and mechanical equipment. It is also designed to incorporate additional facilities for logistics, warehousing and labour accommodation.
